Well I haven’t posted since just after Christmas, but I’m not going to beat myself up over that. I’ve been studying hard and life is full of priorities. I have been starting to do some research into nanocellulose though and have a great website update today as I have now added the nanocellulose calculator!
Richard helped with it a lot as he did all of the coding for me (and in his typical fashion, over analyzed the calculations), but for the most part the calculations were developed on my own trial and error into what worked and what didn’t based on this article by Rémy Dreyfuss-Deseigne as an initial starting point. What was especially helpful was that Cellulose Lab provided me with a study sample and I have been able to make good use of it.

I will be presenting a 3-minute presentation on some of the best practices I have found up to this point at the Association of North American Graduate Programs in the Conservation of Cultural Property (ANAGPIC) Conference in April and will hopefully be able to post my presentation here afterwards.
I saw some crocuses starting to bloom this past week, spring is here and I’m excited I am nearly done my first year of studies. Time has gone by so quickly.

My labmates and I were considering ordering some CNF after attending a presentation by Rémy Dreyfuss-Deseigne, so thanks for the link to this supplier! Out of curiosity, which CNF gel did you order? The film you have pictured here seems a bit less transparent than what we saw in Rémy’s presentation. I’m curious, do you think that’s because of the thickness of the film?
Either way, I love your calculator! I graduated from Queen’s in 2016 and I still remember what a hectic time it was, so Im impressed you had the time/energy to put this together.

Hi Emily, yes, Remy’s workshop was wonderful! I will email you more details that I have, the nanocellulose I am making is quite transparent, I’ll send you some more images as well as the one I posted is on a black background, sometimes lighting can also really play a factor. I haven’t tried the Celova product yet, but it would be interesting to see what the differences are between them. Will follow up with an email now.
